The Cape Town Science Centre Turns 25!

** Celebrating 25 Years of Inspiring Curiosity, Discovery, and Innovation **

This November, the Cape Town Science Centre (CTSC) proudly celebrates 25 years of making science fun, interactive, and accessible to all!

Our journey began in December 1998, when MTN provided the start-up funding to establish a science centre in Cape Town – a dream that quickly took shape under the guidance of Professor Mike Bruton, who founded the Interactive Science Foundation, a registered non-profit organisation, in June 1999.

On 3 November 2000, this dream became a reality with the official opening of the MTN Sciencentre at Canal Walk shopping centre. Over the next decade, more than one million visitors – not including countless outreach participants – experienced the wonder of science through hands-on exhibits and educational programmes.

After 10 remarkable years, the Canal Walk chapter closed on 12 September 2010, as preparations began for an exciting new era. Just over a year later, on 28 December 2011, the Cape Town Science Centre opened its doors in Observatory, offering a more accessible, community-focused home for science learning and engagement.

Since then, the CTSC has continued to grow and evolve – inspiring young minds, supporting teachers, and fostering a love for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) across South Africa.

To mark this special milestone, weโ€™re turning back the clock for the month of November with a throwback entry fee of just R25 – the same price visitors paid when we first opened in 1999 as the MTN Sciencentre.

Join us as we celebrate 25 years of curiosity, creativity, and community!

Please Note:
The CTSC will be closed to the general public and school groups on Monday, 3 November 2025, as we celebrate this special occasion with our team.

SAVE THE DATE – Weโ€™ll be host a public birthday celebration on Saturday, 29 November 2025, with a CTSC Open Day.
