Since 2015, Astron Energy has partnered with the Cape Town Science Centre through the Astron Energy Schools Programme. This STEM education initiative supports 20 schools (10 primary and 10 high schools) near the Astron Energy Refinery with the following:
• School Group Visits: Sponsored, curriculum-aligned visits to the CTSC for around 2,600 primary learners and 40 educators. These hands-on sessions, including workshops and science shows, aim to ignite students’ passion for STEM subjects.
• Code on the Road: This mobile program impacts 800 learners from 20 Astron Energy schools by enhancing digital literacy through a dedicated outreach vehicle and resources such as REACH kits for primary schools and Microbit kits for high schools. The CTSC also aims to support the formation of robotics clubs in each school, providing teacher training and hosting a coding and robotics open day. This initiative emphasizes 4IR readiness and incorporates comprehensive online monitoring and evaluation.
In addition, Astron Energy supports online learning and revision for Matric learners with virtual lessons, presented by the Cape Town Science Centre, that are freely available nationwide:
• Matric Virtual Masterclasses: These classes reach approximately 50,000 Grade 12 learners nationwide with live, interactive online sessions covering Physical Science. The focus is on exam preparation and science demonstrations, with recorded sessions available for future reference. The WCED Mobile Science Centre offers support to schools unable to participate virtually.
• Matric Spring School: This initiative provides an intensive online program for Physical Science, Life Sciences, and Mathematics, benefiting 35,000 Grade 12 learners. The program emphasizes exam readiness and tackles complex topics, offering both live and recorded options to extend accessibility.
Together, these initiatives foster STEM engagement, exam preparedness, and digital skills for learners, addressing educational needs while nurturing curiosity and confidence in STEM subjects throughout South Africa.
