On 9 August 2024, the Cape Town Science Centre’s

On 9 August 2024, the Cape Town Science Centre’s public holiday programme celebrated the contributions that women have made to Science. While women’s month may have come to an end, the CTSC will continue to honour them with our weekend programme for September and October.

From groundbreaking discoveries in atmospheric chemistry by Susan Solomon, to the incredible discovery of South African naturalist Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, and the coding genius of Margaret Hamilton, who helped land Apollo on the moon — this programme is for everyone who’s passionate about science and history!

Explore exhibits, join hands-on workshops, and dive deep into the remarkable achievements of these trailblazing women! Don’t miss the fun with Sports Bingo and challenge yourself with Tech Brain Busters — exciting activities for the whole family!

14:30 – Demonstration in The Science Corner

If you're visiting the Cape Town Science Centre on Saturday, 24 August 2024, bring at least two plastic bottles (500ml, 1 or 2 litre) and get ONE FREE experience at the CTSC (You can choose between a Mindball Game, a Gyroscope Ride or a VR experience).

Join us for a dynamic and inspiring afternoon dedicated to empowering women across various industries. This event is designed to connect ambitious women with industry leaders, potential employers, and a network of like-minded professionals. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore diverse career paths, gain valuable insights, and build connections that can propel their careers forward. This opportunity is aimed at female first and second year students but not limited to (i.e. girls who have matriculated and have taken a gap year are welcome to apply).

Highlights for Friday, 9 August 2024:

[11:00] Workshop: "Granville's Celestial Legacy"

Evelyn Boyd Granville is a woman of many skills. In 1956, she worked for IBM as a computer programmer. Her job included making 'real-time' calculations during satellite launchings. Join us in our workshop where we celebrate the work that Evelyn Boyd Granville has achieved by engineering our own DIY satellite.

Cost: R5 | Ages: 5+ | Max capacity: 30 kids

[13:00] ** SCIENCE SHOW **

[14:30] Demonstration in The Science Corner: "The Curie X-Ray Revolution"

Marie Curie played a significant role in science. During World War 1, she established mobile x-ray units to provide medical imaging for wounded soldiers. Join us in today's demonstration where we learn about x-rays in a fun messy way.
